ENO Mini operas submission

The first victim of war
Characters
The Officers                                                        Tenor and Bass semi-chorus
The children                                                       Soprano and Alto semi-chorus
The Pilot                                                             Counter-tenor soloist.
Dr. David Kelly                                                    Tenor soloist.

Scene
This scene concentrates on the emotional torment of Dr. David Kelly just before his untimely death on Harrowdown Hill.  I personally feel Dr. Kelly must have experienced deep personal anguish over his role in the Iraq war, and indeed his expertise in weaponry being the antithesis of the core aspects of his Bahá'í Faith
Yet, ironically it is his very involvement in the Iraq war that sets him on the journey to true enlightenment through the Seven Valleys of his faith.  Throughout the scene I intend to show Dr. Kelly experiencing great guilt, shame and a sense of helplessness and inevitablilty.  This will also be interspersed with a gradual metamorphosis from Dr. Kelly a world-weary government advisor to one who has experienced an inner peace by experiencing in miniature the Seven Valleys of the Bahá'í Faith.
The scene is simultaneously in four separate locations:
·         With Dr. Kelly  on Harrowdown Hill as he comes to terms with his involvement in the war and how this
·         With British Army Officers at naval base in the southern port of Umm Qasr.
·         With Iraqi children playing in Basrah, who spot British aircraft flying overhead.
·         With a solitary British pilot in his cockpit, flying over Basrah.

And so it is;
And so it has always been.
The fire rages.

The Officers:                                                                              Dr. Kelly

Cocooned in a cabin of coloured screens                                         We seek the ashes,
Too late to ponder what might have been.                                       The ashes of ourselves.

Dr. Kelly

The hour of my departure’s come;
I hear the voice that calls me home.

The Officers                                                                           Dr. Kelly

Their fate was fastened with my harness.                                 Death is the gate
But we are fond of our prison.
Not in mine innocence I trust,
                                                                                              I bow to thy sanctuary.

Dr. Kelly                                                                                                             The Children
I leave the world                                                                                       Painful birds
without a tear                                                                                           Dance with the sun
I am shielded from sorrow                                                                      Chasing clouds,
At last, let trouble cease.                                                                    it’s course to run.

Awright, min

Hello everyone!!

I am in Glasgow at the moment, going to audition for a masters course at the RSAMD.  I have been to so many auditions in the last few months, I have become a bit disillutioned with it all.  I really want to be the best singer I can possibly be, but after a few auditions where nothing comes to fruition one does begin to wonder what one is doing wrong.  But nevermind, you just have to roll with the punches and keep going.

The Northfield AIYF Youth Singing Group is starting up again.  Well, it actually started last Thursday but I am now going on a publicity blitz.  We need to get some new singers into our little group.  Please spread the word to any parents out there that have kids who like singing.

Group singing lessons!  They are FREE!!! FREEEEEEE!!!  Thursday nights 6pm - 7pm at the Northfield Community Centre, Byron Square.

Free singing lessons will be provided for children aged 8 - 14 yrs. They will receive guidance from professional musicians, choral conductors, visiting experts and volunteers.
The Northfield Youth Singing Group has been formed following a successful summer residency in June 2009. The group was formed by the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in collaboration with Glasgow singing group Little Larks and local community music and events company JCN Arts & Events. The regular weekly sessions will culminate in the Northfield Youth Singing Group performing as part of the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in 2010.

Cheers

Sweet

I am getting more and more enquiries about singing lessons, invoices are being paid and the Northfield Youth Singing Group is working well.  Today is the first day that I feel I have a real business :O

Things are looking good for my little venture, it's all quite exciting!

I am having a flatwarming on Saturday 14th and would like to invite Aberdeen Blogs :)  I know most of you anyway.  I don't want my place to be trashed or anything, but I think the worst offenders are already coming (billy) :p

I just heard from one of my oldest and dearest friends, one of my buddies that got me through university. His mum passed away suddenly last week.

I think it would be inappropriate to go into details about my friend or his family, but I just wanted to write something.

She was a lovely woman, she was always really kind to me and it's a damn shame that she has gone.
